Valentine's Day at Corpus Christi School

Valentines Day, also called St Valentine’s Day holiday is celebrated yearly, on February 14th. Some history of the holiday originates back to the Roman Festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival celebrated the coming of the spring season, including fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. Pope Gelasius I replaced the Lupercalia festival with St. Valentine's Day.

The first commercial Valentine’s in the United States started in the mid-1800’s. The day is most popular in the US, Britain, Canada, Argentina, France, Mexico, and South Korea. In the Philippines, it is the most common wedding anniversary, and mass weddings of hundreds of couples are not uncommon on that date.

Valentine's day is a day of love. A day to celebrate the ones you care about. At Corpus Christi, “heartgrams” were sold from the 27th of January to the 7th of February, during the first and second recess -- student council sold heartgrams for a dollar to all grades. Heartgrams are pieces of red paper where kids can sign their names and send them to others to show that they appreciate them. Some are sending heartgrams to their friends and others are sending them to people in their class or even teachers and staff. Heartgrams have become an important tradition in our community during Valentine’s Day to show and spread kindness throughout the school. All proceeds from the heart grams sale are donated to the American Heart Association.

In addition to heartgrams, each student usually brings candies, toys, or cards to share with their class. Some of the classes have a class party, a breakfast, or crafts. Students enjoy their day by spending time with each other.

This year, how can you make somebody’s Valentine’s Day better? We know we can, by spreading kindness and giving heartgrams to our friends. When others send people heartgrams, they might feel happy, appreciated, loved, and noticed. Other people in the CCB Blog Club have said that they would feel appreciated and that they would also send heartgrams to friends in other grades.
