From Marie to Maya by Ashlyn L and Abigail Y (7th)

As we wrap up our wonderful time learning about the great women who make a difference in our country and in the world, 7th graders Ashlyn and Abigail write about two impactful women. One who was a great pioneer in the Science-Medical field and one who’s words never fail to inspire and move us.

Marie Curie, was born November 7th, 1867 around the Congress Kingdom of Poland known as the Russian Empire. She was the youngest sibling of her 3 sisters and brother. She was a physicist, chemist and a pioneer who studied radiation. Marie Curie first discovered Radioactivity. During World War I, she helped put X-rays into the ambulances. Something that inspires us about Marie Curie is how she was a physicist, chemist and a pioneer studying radioactivity all at once. She was a hard worker, an amazing person in her community and made a difference in the world by studying to create tools that were aimed to help people who were injured. As a student, Marie Curie inspires me to help others, and to continue studying. Hopefully one day, I could be as successful as Marie Curie, in the field of Science, and make a difference in the world.

Maya Angelou made a difference in society, by strongly and passionately standing by what she knew was right and what she believed in. During her lifetime she was a Civil Rights Activist, and contributed to the Civil Rights Movement. Maya Angelou, made works of art filled with her feelings, which caught the attention of many people. She spent her life, helping others believe in themselves and one another. In the eyes of many audiences, she was a hero. Not only because she was a generous and an influential person, but also because she made a big impact on people’s lives, through her works of art, and actions… What inspires me about Maya Angelou, was how she spoke her mind, and how passionate she was about standing up for others, and doing what she believed in. She defended the rights of women, as well as the ignored, and the youth. Maya Angelou always looked to the positive side of things, even when life was hard on her, she strongly pushed through all the hardships she experienced. She never missed an opportunity to show others how strong and amazing she was. She is undoubtedly a role-model for us, by encouraging and inspiring us to not give up on our dreams, and to fight/defend what we believe in.
