Welcome Back Comets!

Can you believe it’s back to school already! My summer was full of lots of adventures and I hope yours was too!

I spent six weeks in a musical theatre program at Interlochen Arts Camp (Northern Michigan) where I got to meet kids from all over the world, ages range from 8 to 18.

Interlochen

Living at Interlochen required lots of walking, with over 1200 acres of land and no form of transportation other than your legs. Classes ended at 3:45 and started at 9:00, with a one hour rest period after lunch.

Cabin Life

Overall Cabin Life was great. The counselors were kind, my cabin mates were friendly, and except for a few bugs, the beds were comfortable. We would wake up every day by the bell at 6:50 and go to sleep at 9:30. Every day after classes we would have a fun activity, one at 4:00 and one at 6:30, so we were never bored.

Weather

As an Oakland resident, I found it hard to adapt to such drastic changes in temperature and humidity. I’ve lived here in the bay area for over nine years, where the normal summer temperatures are in the sixties and seventies, and suddenly to jump up twenty, or even thirty degrees higher in temperature isn’t very normal.  It was also very, very humid. That made the temperatures seem even hotter. During my first week at camp, I experienced my first thunder and lightning storm. It was so severe, that we had to shelter in place, right next to the boiler room!

Fun Stuff

My summer was full of many fun firsts. I learned to go boating, swam in a fresh water lake, and I attended my first country music concert! I went to see “Much Ado About Nothing,” a play written by William Shakespeare, and it was amazing!

The Musical

I was in a musical called Starmites. It was written in the 1980s  by Barry Keating. It’s about a girl named Eleanor who believes the comic books she reads are real. The comic book is called Starmites and is about these young boys who are forever obligated to protect their universe from an evil villain named “Shak Graa.” Shak Graa created a musical weapon named the, “Cruelty,” an instrument of soul destructing power!  The Goddess, “Oragala” stole and hid it away from Shak Graa. The prophecy says that “When Super Hero “Milady” returns from the world of men, the Cruelty shall be found again.” Meanwhile, Eleanor gets drawn into the Starmites world known as “Innerspace.” Eleanor and the Starmites eventually find the Cruelty, destroy it, and redeem Innerspace, and figure out Eleanor is superhero “Milady.”

I learned a lot and had a lot of fun! I can’t wait for next summer.
