Training our kids to be rescuers!

*“WELLLLL-come back kiddos! Ready for a day of learning first aid and CPR????” asks a woman who walks in with first aid materials.

*“What,” I said.

*”I SAID ARE YOU READY!?!?!?” she screams

*Note: NONE of this was actually said.

Well, it’s that time of year again, the time of fake bloody bandages and silicone dummies fill our day as we become certified First. Aid. Givers. We started with some basic review, where the administrator threw a beach ball with medical questions around for people to answer the questions. Each person who answered a question correctly, got play-doh (but don’t worry, no one didn’t get play-doh). Then a couple of student volunteers (one was acting as the victim and the other the rescuer) attempted to demonstrate how to properly bandage a wound and dispose of the gloves used. Soon after, everyone got to try how to take off the gloves properly and later get to throw away, GOOD. CLEAN. GLOVES!!!! (They weren’t even used to treat anything that could pose as a hazard to anyone. But, I guess that’s one way to DESTROY THE ENVIRONMENT!) Suddenly, the recess bell rang setting us up for the next part of CPR training. After recess, we went down to the gym for the official CPR training. We started with reviewing the correct order of steps which were:

  1. First, check to make sure the scene is safe
  2. Second, make sure the person is conscience, if they need help, and if they are okay
  3. Third, tell someone to get the AED and someone else to call 911
  4. Fourth, start with thirty compressions that are two inches for an adult or fifteen two finger compressions that are an inch deep for infants
  5. Then you do two breaths after the compressions
  6. Sixth, you should have someone set up the AED and keep on doing compressions meanwhile until the AED says otherwise
  7. You should repeat the steps four and five until help comes after the AED has delivered it’s shock

After CPR, we learned how other AEDs operate and we also reviewed the Heimlich Maneuver for adults and babies. Finally we finished our, what seemed like whole hours of grueling training, it was finally over. And we put on our CPR stickers of certification just to prove it!
