Corpus Christi’s Resource program has grown a lot over the years. This year, Ms. Murphy, has added even more resource teachers to provide differentiated learning to our students using a variety of methods. This year we are up to 7 resource teachers plus Dr. Sharon, our school psychologist, to provide excellent services to our students. Students learn in so many different ways and the resource teachers give them the tools they need to succeed.
If students need extra help with reading comprehension and reading fluency, they work in a small group of no more than 3 students in a program called Fountas and Pinnell. This program uses high interest books, both fiction and non-fiction. These books are at a student’s perfect individualized reading level, so they can work on building the skills necessary to fully understand and enjoy what they are reading.
For students who have a specific learning disability in reading or dyslexia we have a program to help them with word attack skills and spelling called the Barton System. Students work one on one with a resource teacher to build phonemic awareness and word attack skills so that they learn how to break down words and read more easily.
We also support learning within the classroom to check in with students for understanding and give help when necessary. Being able to learn in a way that is best for them gives students the confidence to do great things. We as educators simply need to find a way for them to show us their wealth of information. We learn from them everyday and it is an honor!
